About Seoul Gimpo International Airport
Gimpo International Airport is located on the southern side of Han River at the western end of the South Korean capital of Seoul. It is currently the second largest airport in Korea after the Incheon International Airport.
The Japanese originally built Gimpo during World War II as a runway. It was expanded and used extensively during the Korean War. After the war, it continued to expand into South Korea’s largest international airport.
After the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, it was obvious that Gimpo would not be able to keep up with the demand for flights. Therefore, construction began on a new airport for international travel, which opened in 2001. The majority of flights from Gimpo are now domestic. However, there are currently a few international destinations.
Asiana and Korean Air are the main carriers. The airport has numerous shops, restaurants, and banks which offer currency exchange and withdrawal services. Other services offered by the airport include an information desk, travelers insurance, and an Internet service counter. There are several shrines and temples nearby Gimpo that are good tourist destinations.
